Risperdal is an atypical antipsychotic drug that is used for treating schizophrenia and symptoms of bipolar disorder. The drug, which is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, is also commonly prescribed to patients who have ADHD and autism.

However, hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against the pharmaceutical giant in the last few years alleging that it suppressed information and failed to warn doctors and patients about the drug’s potential side effects. The drug has been linked to the growth of female breasts in boys and young men and other dangerous side effects include an increased risk for high blood sugar and development of Type 2 diabetes.

If you or a loved one has suffered ill effects from taking Risperdal as directed, you may have grounds for a dangerous drug claim or lawsuit seeking rightful compensation for your damages. Contact a Raleigh Risperdal lawyer today.

Risperdal Side Effects

Risperdal is used to treat various psychological disorders in adults and children such as schizophrenia, bipolar, and complications from autism. The drug has also been used for off-label purposes by some medical practitioners in treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Unfortunately, its harmful side effects have now damaged the lives of many patients.

These side effects include:

  • Hyperglycemia (too much glucose in the blood)
  • Dyslipidemia (abnormal fat and cholesterol in the blood)
  • Gynecomastia, the development of breast tissue in males

Breast tissue is developed due to the hormone prolactin which the drug stimulates and can cause painful nipples as well as discharge. In some cases, breast size in young men and boys has grown to a size comparable to a D cup in women. The labeling initially used for the drug, however, failed to properly warn consumers of the effects that could result from higher levels of prolactin.

These effects have resulted in both physical and psychological trauma for patients. Corrective treatments include further drugs as well as painful surgeries needed to reduce breast tissue.

According to Bloomberg, Johnson & Johnson has also been sued by various states that claimed that the company improperly marketed Risperdal to physicians who treated children and adolescents, despite the fact that the drug had not yet received approval from regulators for pediatric use.

Side Effect Treatments

The treatment for gynecomastia is to stop taking Risperdal. Plastic surgery is going to be a severe option but something that doctors would be able to offer if the breast tissue is large enough and noticeable enough that it is impacting the person’s quality of life.
