While insulin pumps were designed to make daily injections unnecessary, cases of serious injury and death from defective or malfunctioning parts are being reported to the FDA. Whitley Law Firm is investigating claims involving defective insulin pumps, including Medtronic MiniMed Paradigm Insulin Infusion Sets, which are the subject of a Class 1 Recall – the most serious recall issued by the FDA.

If you or a loved one have suffered a serious injury and believe it may have been caused by a defective insulin pump, we urge you to contact a Raleigh insulin pump attorney from Whitley Law Firm for help.

Insulin Issues and Complications

On June 10, 2013, Medtronic, the manufacturer of Paradigm® Insulin Pumps sent an Urgent Medical Device Safety Notification notifying Paradigm pump users and distributors of a safety issue with the inside connector of Medtronic Paradigm infusion sets.

Medtronic warned that insulin could block the connector vents, potentially resulting in too much or too little insulin being delivered, which could lead to hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, which in extreme cases may cause loss of consciousness and death.

Warning signs of too much or too little insulin:

  • Blurred vision
  • Cardiac arrhythmia
  • Stupor
  • Slurred speech
  • Abnormal breathing
  • Pins and needles sensation
  • Coma
  • Seizures

Dangerous Risks Associated With Insulin Imbalances

Both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia are serious and life-threatening conditions that if left untreated can lead to death. If hyperglycemia (a condition called ketoacidosis) is left untreated, it can lead to heart disease, heart attack, and death in patients with no history of heart disease or heart failure. On the other hand, hypoglycemia can cause seizures, unconsciousness, permanent brain damage, or death.
