What are Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)?

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are highly toxic chemicals once commonly used in manufacturing and building. Common uses include insulation, adhesives, paints, floor finishes, and more. Once in the environment, PCBs can remain for long periods as they do not readily break down.

Due to their link to cancers, the production of PCBs was banned by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1979. Toxic chemical testing at Poe Hall revealed PCBs 38 times higher than what is deemed safe levels.
