Medtronic MiniMed Insulin Pump Recall

In 2020 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched a Class I recall on 600 series MiniMed insulin pumps manufactured by Medtronic. The recall encompasses hundreds of thousands of the company’s MiniMed 630G insulin pumps (used by those 16 and older for management of type 1 diabetes) and MiniMed 670G insulin pumps (used by those 7 and older for management of type 1 diabetes).

A Class I recall is the most serious recall the FDA can implement, representing a “reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

Included in the recall are more than 320,000 Medtronic MiniMed insulin pumps, which are used by patients with diabetes to help manage their blood sugar levels. Medtronic is now facing claims from consumers citing injuries and even one fatality stemming from defects in the insulin pumps.

The defective medical device lawyers at the Whitley Law Firm are currently investigating claims involving faulty Medtronic MiniMed 630G and 670G units. Contact us for free today if you suffered injury or lost a loved one as a result of an insulin pump defect.

What Medtronic MiniMed Insulin Pumps Are Included in the Recall?

All lots of Medtronic MiniMed 630G manufactured prior to October 2019 (distributed from September 2016 to October 2019) and Medtronic MiniMed 670G manufactured prior to August 2019 (distributed from June 2017 to August 2019) are included in the FDA recall. All told, the recall includes a total of 322,005 insulin pump units.

Why Are Medtronic MiniMed Insulin Pumps Being Recalled?

The recall announcement stems from a defective retainer ring in the insulin pump unit. If the retainer ring is damaged or missing, the insulin cartridge may not lock into place properly. If this occurs, patients may receive too much or too little insulin.

Excess insulin can result in hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Potential complications of hypoglycemia include:

  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of balance (potentially resulting in falls)
  • Confusion and disorientation
  • Seizures
  • Loss of consciousness – at least one patient has sued after a defect in her MiniMed insulin pump caused her to fall into a diabetic coma

Meanwhile, insufficient insulin can lead to hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar. Hyperglycemia can lead to symptoms similar to those associated with uncontrolled diabetes, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Extreme thirst
  • Persistent feelings of hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Changes in vision
  • Numbness and tingling sensations in the extremities
  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Slow-healing injuries
  • Frequent or recurrent infections

In extreme cases, hyperglycemia can lead to ketoacidosis and other serious complications.

Did You Suffer Complications Due to a Defective MiniMed Insulin Pump?

If you used a Medtronic MiniMed 630G or 670G (or you are the parent of a child who used one of these devices) and you suffered injury due to hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, or another issue related to improper insulin dosage, you and/or your family may have a claim against the manufacturer.

Compensation may be recoverable in a Medtronic MiniMed insulin pump lawsuit for damages such as:

  • Medical expenses
  • Lost wages
  • Loss of earning capacity
  • Out-of-pocket costs
  • Pain and suffering
  • Wrongful death (if your loved one died as a result of complications associated with excess or insufficient insulin)

It is important to consult an attorney as soon as possible if you believe you have a claim. An experienced lawyer can review the details of your case and advise you of your options for pursuing compensation.
