FDA Announces Recall of Zimmer Persona Knee Implant

Zimmer Persona knee implants require a device called a Persona Trabecular Metal Tibial plate in order to function properly. Unfortunately, it is this very device that has been the target of a recent recall and numerous complaints from patients throughout the U.S.

When complaints began to increase, Zimmer initiated a voluntary recall of the tibial plate. This recall was announced by the FDA in March 2015 and affects over 11,000 devices. How are patients affected by the Zimmer Persona knee implant?

The tibial plate is used to fixate the knee implant to the patient. According to complaints, however, the device has failed to perform as it should and is causing implants to loosen early. Patients who experience loosening can suffer a number of injuries as a result.

Consequences caused by a loosening tibial plate include bone damage, excess joint fluid, swelling, pain, and tissue damage. Many patients may require a revision surgery to replace the implant and prevent further complications from developing.
