Prolonged Use of Elmiron may Cause Vision Problems

New findings suggest that Elmiron, also referred to as pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS), can negatively affect an individual’s vision. This may occur when Elmiron is taken for an extended period of time. While developments and further investigations with Elmiron are still occurring, many individuals have questions as to what Elmiron is and how it could cause someone harm.

What does Elmiron Treat?

Elmiron is the only PPS pill that has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat painful bladder syndrome. Symptoms of painful bladder syndrome, also called interstitial cystitis, include feelings of:

  • Pressure
  • Pain
  • Discomfort in the bladder

Individuals suffering from painful bladder syndrome may experience frequent urination or feel a strong sense of urgency to urinate. Elmiron may be prescribed by a doctor to help manage discomfort and pain resulting from interstitial cystitis.

The Dangers of Elmiron

Several studies, including ones published from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Kaiser Permanente, and the Emory University School of Medicine, suggest that there may be a correlation between prolonged Elmiron use and vision damage. Some studies suggest that Elmiron may cause pigmentary maculopathy, which affects the retina of the eye. Pigmentary maculopathy may negatively affect the ability of the eye to sense and adapt to changes in light.

Some studies suggest that the likelihood of developing pigmentary maculopathy increases with prolonged Elmiron use. Individuals with pigmentary maculopathy may experience several symptoms. This includes difficulty reading, distorted vision, or vision loss. While pigmentary maculopathy may be untreatable, it could be prevented in some cases. Currently, some eye doctors are recommending that patients experiencing maculopathy in the eye discontinue taking Elmiron. Individuals who have taken Elmiron and are experiencing symptoms related to pigmentary maculopathy should contact their doctor to discuss their options.
