The team at Whitley Law Firm was proud to sponsor and participate in the Blue Ridge to the Beach bike ride to help fight food insecurity and support Feeding the Carolinas. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity affected 1 in 9 Americans; however, now with the pandemic’s additional financial pressures about 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 4 children are facing hunger and limited access to food in the Carolinas.

Food insecurity has many misconceptions and can affect anyone at any time due to emergencies, unforeseen expenses, or layoffs. With COVID-19 causing changes to many people’s daily life and finances, one “bad month” can cause a family to become even more vulnerable to food insecurity. Many families do not qualify for governmental food assistance but need extra help feeding their families. That’s why organizations like Feeding the Carolinas are so important. Together, food banks feed an additional 40 million people in the US who need support. All donations collected from the Blue Ridge to the Beach ride went directly to supporting local, North Carolina food banks and hunger relief programs to help people who are in dire need of food.

We were particularly excited about this event because our attorney Matthew Bissette’s brother, Michael Bissette, biked his longest journey across North Carolina to support Feeding the Carolinas. We are proud to have sponsored and joined him along the way during various stretches of his journey.

All proceeds were directly donated to Feed the Carolinas in efforts to help end hunger in our local community. Thank you to everyone who supported this event. Together we were able to raise $5,185 in the Blue Ridge to the Beach race.
