As you go through the application for the Supplemental Security Income filing process, there are many different components of the process to take into account.

The more you understand the process in Raleigh, the easier the application and the process as a whole will be for you. For this reason, it is important to consider retaining a Raleigh Supplemental Security Income lawyer to help guide you through it. Not only will your attorney be your advocate, but they will also answer any questions you may have, and help you make decisions that will benefit you in the future.

Similarities to SSDI Application

The process for filing for SSI is similar to the filing for SSDI. The first step of the SSI application process is to file an initial claim. Nothing will happen if Social Security does not receive an SSI application. However, the application cannot be submitted through Social Services, though. The application must be submitted through the Social Security Administration.

Filing an Initial Claim

An initial claim can be filed in three different ways:

  • The first way is to use Social Security’s website. Their website is easy to navigate and it is possible to file a claim online.
  • The second way that an individual can apply for benefits is by calling the Social Security national 800 number.
  • The third way someone can file an initial claim is to visit their local Social Security office.

Paperwork Questionnaire

The paperwork questionnaire for an initial claim looks similar to a disability insurance package. It includes questions regarding where you receive treatment, the types of functional limitations you have, the names of your doctors, what your income is, and what your assets or resources are, for example, the things that you own, your bank accounts, how many cars you own, and what property you own.

Documentation or Evidence Needed

Documentation can include bank statements and verification that you own property. The evidence that you need to produce is the names, addresses, and phone numbers of your doctors as well as hospitals that you have been visiting to treat your impairments.

Waiting to Hear Back from the SSA

It can take 30 to 90 days to hear back from your initial application. During this period of time, the file is sent to the North Carolina Disability Determination Services. They review it to see what is in the medical records and if you meet Social Security’s definition of disability.

Expediting This Process

If Social Security or the Disability Determination Services are having trouble finding any of your medical records, you should cooperate with them by providing any additional information they might need to evaluate your claim.

Other Things to Know

It is very important to update Social Security regarding your treatment. If you file an application and then you receive additional treatment after you filed that application, you will want to contact Social Security and let them know there have been changes to your health or to your healthcare.
