The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a press release regarding breast plant labeling and telling manufacturers to add a warning about the risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). BIA-ALCL is a type of lymphoma that can develop around breast implants and occurs frequently in patients who have implants with textured surfaces. BIA-ALCL is not breast cancer, but a cancer of the immune system.
The FDA also issued a report that stated the number of BIA-ALCL cases increased by 28% in the last half of 2019, and the cases were specifically linked to breast implants with textured designs. In a study conducted by Columbian researchers, it was discovered that many breast implant brands are associated with BIA-ALCL. Speak with an attorney today to learn more.
Who is to Blame?
The company Allergan has been found by the FDA to have a link between their products and an increased chance of cancer. Most cases of BIA-ALCL were specifically linked to the design of particular Allergan Breast Implants.
The FDA found 733 BIA-ALCL diagnoses globally and out of the known cases, 620 have been linked to breast implants sold by Allergan. In addition, 36 patients died globally after being diagnosed with BIA-ALCL and 15 of those deaths were linked to Allergan. Allergan is currently facing at least 150 product liability lawsuits and class action lawsuits over breast implant cancer problems.
